Behind the Dish

This is a recipe that my Oma makes every year for Christmas or special occasions. One weekend every Christmas is set aside to make these cookies with my cousins and Oma. Oma will also make them for other family gatherings and if any of her grandchildren ask her to. This recipe is one that my Oma made with her mom when she was young and living in Germany. The cookies are not too sweet, they go great with tea and coffee, and they travel well when going on a vacation and you need a little snack. Give them a try.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cup butter

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 packs of vanilla sugar (One box of Dr. Oetker Vanilla Sugar contains several packets. If unavailable, substitute 3 teaspoons sugar and add it to the 1 cup of sugar.)

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 ½ cups flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F.

  2. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla sugar, and eggs together and stir until nicely blended.

  3. Slowly add in flour and mix until smooth.

  4. Insert dough into a piping bag or meat grinder with different sections.

  5. Bake until the cookies are golden yellow.

  6. Let cool and enjoy.

Variations

Dip the ends of these cookies in warm chocolate for a glaze. You can also make colored glazes to paint over the cookies, using food coloring and confectioner’s sugar.
