Folk Arts in Education
Folk Arts in Education (FAIE) offers in-class residencies led by tradition bearers in music, dance, crafts, oral expression, and other art forms at no cost to schools.
FAIE Programs

Residencies last for 2 to 5 days and can be scheduled as a weekly recurring workshop or completed within a week. Class sizes are typically 25 students or fewer and may depend on the art form being presented. Through residencies students become makers and doers of an art form and gain an in-depth understanding of the art tradition and its culture.

Assemblies are available for multi-class and school-wide programs, scheduled as one-time events.
The Folklife Center of Northern New Jersey (FCNNJ) provides the following:
Exceptional tradition bearers who educate students through art, music, crafts, storytelling, and more! All teaching artists are vetted by our folklorist and meet FCNNJ’s high standards for authenticity and ability to share cultural skills and knowledge with students of various age ranges.
Programming is free. FCNNJ is funded by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
School Prerequisites
Location
Your school must be in Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Warren, Sussex, or Morris County. Any schools outside these counties will be referred to the school district's regional folklife center. Education programs are open to students of all ages, Pre-K through college-age.
Teacher Liaison
Schools must have a teacher liaison who will be working directly with students to help coordinate the residency. This may include one or two planning meetings with the FCNNJ’s Education Coordinator and/or Folklorist. Responsiveness via email and phone is important to ensuring a successful program. Teachers may be asked to share their cell phone numbers for direct communication with FCNNJ’s Arts in Education Coordinator.
Prep Work
Students may be asked to watch videos, complete worksheets, or receive lectures on cultural topics prior to the start of the residency.
